Fan Expo Toronto

Alright I'll be the first to admit that this post is a tad bit early. But that won't stop me from posting it. I'm always excited for Fan Expo Toronto, but this year I'm even more excited. I'm planning my wedding and it's going to be stealth geek. Which means that I'm planning little things that other geeks will immediately recognize, like this bow tie napkin, but others will not recognize it, they will merely thing it's interesting.
Doctor Who anyone?

That means a shopping trip is definitely on the horizon for stealthy geek items while I'm at Fan Expo! Wee! I love nothing more than shopping while I'm there and this year I can hit Aaron with Bambi eyes and beg for items that I could potentially use at my wedding. And maybe a few pieces just because.

Also I can swoon over Nathan Fillion because he is coming back to Fan Expo this year.
Swoon. Uh. Ahem. Back to the program

Now to wait, not very patiently, for the rest of the guests to be announced in the coming months. Updates will be coming as they arrive. And no I won't be posting about the Walking Dead cast members that are also attending as I haven't seen Walking Dead. Who else do you hope to see at Fan Expo? I'm hoping for Brent Spiner

Geek Kids Support

I am in the concurrent education program working my way towards becoming a teacher, and the article about Michael just made me cry.

This is a young boy who's family did everything right in how they supported him, but his classmates and the neighbourhood children he knew pushed him to attempt suicide. He's 11. He shouldn't even know what suicide is. Michael is just like any other child that enjoys favourite shows, has great role models, and a loving family. But because his favourite show is My Little Pony, his classmates teased him and bullied him. Please read the full article here written by Star Wars Katie's mom.

Star Wars Katie is another young child that was bullied for liking a show. Her favourite show was Star Wars and it prompted a lot of harsh comments from others because she is a girl. Jen at Epbot helped make Katie feel empowered for loving Star Wars, and now Katie's mom is reaching out for support for Michael and his family. Support your children, and the other children around you with whatever interests them. It's heartbreaking to see how detrimental negative comments are and the power they have. Words of encouragement are so easily drowned out by even one negative comment. So let's work together to make sure each person we can help, hear our positive comments and help them forget the negative ones.

Geek Cupcakes

I enjoy baking and letting my geek flag fly. Combining the two has given me some serious points with my fiancée. I try to make him fun cupcakes for his birthday and to keep him guessing on which fandom I'm going to use next. I'm not telling yet what my plans are for his birthday this year, but I'll show you the cupcakes from past celebrations.
Went with the command, engineer, and science officers colours
This was the first time I worked with fondant and it was really fun! Once it warms up in your hands it becomes really easy to work with. I started with white and dyed the colours myself. I meant to add edible silver glitter to the symbols but it was sadly out of stock.

The goomba is my favourite
I kept with the fondant for my Super Mario theme but added more detail. I wanted to give some love to the aspects of Mario that aren't always given the love they deserve. Again, I dyed the fondant for each piece and had a lot of fun creating the characters and items.

I wonder what starter I'll get
These cupcakes were fun but I changed my process. I used regular icing instead of placing a fondant circle on top of the iced cupcake. Dying regular icing is much more difficult than dying fondant. It looked like a blood bath with the amount of dye I had to use to get that true red. I will always buy pre-coloured icing when trying to make red from now on. Pinky promise. These cupcakes were awesome because I also dyed the batter so there were blue, green, and red cupcakes underneath the pokeball iced top. Each of our friends grabbed a cupcake and revealed their starter Pokemon- red for fire type, blue for water type, and green for grass type.

Did you have a favourite show that you would want a cupcake of? Let me know in the comments.
